You have to love the job of trading, one day like yesterday the SPY closes the day with a bear controlled candle, then you wake up the next day, and the futures look as if the bulls are going to have a great day. (Love the job of trading). Yesterday the SPY closed with a Doji using the 34-ema as the moving average support, so far so good but the price action today will need to show that the Bulls have staying power. Yesterday’s Doji also closed right at the Lower Red T-Band. (See chart). It is clearly obvious the SPY struggles to keep even one leg over the $280ish wall. With the VIX showing Bullish activity and the DIA’s and IWM showing weakness, this market is filled with sharks circling looking for dinner. Cash is a good position sometimes when there is a lack of clarity, but if you are trading use the trends, price action (Candlesticks), proven patterns and strategies.

Price action tested by both the buyers and the sellers, use extreme caution.  Friday the SPY closed below the lower MegaPhone line (Bearish clue) and above our Red Green Line (Bullish clue). With the political trash, today’s market should be pretty screwed up. The DIA’s have posted three lower highs (Bearish clue), Friday the DIA’s closed below the Red Green line (Bearish clue) and above the March low (Consolidation clue). IWM closed below the RED Green line (Bearish clue) and below the March low (Bearish clue). The QQQ’s are in a Bullish trend, and Friday’s candle suggests a lower low today. As I said screwed up! Sure glad we follower our Friday rule and closed a few positions to be lighter going into the weekend. As I approach the trading week, it will be with extreme caution, a few longs and shorts always remembering that cash is a position if the market gets too unruly. Something to always remember being a swing trader is that you don’t have to trade every day and sitting in cash for a day or two is ok.

From Open to close yesterday the SPY had a $4.10 day, not bad at all. Now the buyers need to keep their bulls focused in the right direction. With the fear of rescission heating up, the bulls will likely catch a little wind that smells like fear. At some point, enough fear will cause selling in the market. MKE being down and the BA troubles will weigh on the DOW today. (Caution). The buyers produced a nice Bullish Engulf on the SPY chart closing at $284.73; A Bullish Engulf is just one gear in the machine. Now the buyers need to show they have what it takes to drive the price action higher. So far our Red Green Trend is working, the question is will the buyers be able to push the 50SMA over the 200SMA?

Yesterday (Thursday) was a nice profitable day, and I suspect today will be the same because we typically take profits of Fridays and lighten up going into the weekend.

For the most part, the SPY’s price action was uneventful yesterday with the statement by the Fed Chairman. The past two candles are suggesting a bit chop headed our way and a possible lower T-Band test. A close today below yesterdays low (280.32) would clue us in on a possible deeper move down, below 278.45 would set up a test of the March low. If price action and can come together and hold above 278.45ish (our Red Line) a few more buyers would be interested and could push the SPY back up and above the Green line T-Band Line. The trend and price action is the best information you can have as a trader and to have a tool to deliver that information would be golden.

The SPY is still having a tough time navigating the rough seas around the $280.00 – $282.00 area. The reason may be the bears are trying to build a right shoulder to go along with the head and left shoulder (Weekly Chart). While the possible right should is in construction, we will see price action chop around, and this will test the best of traders. Having a handle on the trend and price action within the trend is a huge advantage for the active swing trader. Yesterday’s price action closed above the T-Line, and the T-Line is tracking above the 17ema and the 34ema, other than yesterday’s candle controlled by the sellers the current trend is still bullish. The price action and the health of the current trend will determine the outcome of the possible right shoulder. Tools of a good swing trader might include a strong understanding of chart patterns, trends and trend lines, support and resistance and the all-important price action.

Looking at yesterdays SPY chart, I have drawn a box around the POP Out of The Box Pattern, with a bullish pop and hold today we will have a confirmed POOTB pattern. The bulls might finally be on their way to challenge the September / October highs with the first challenge of $286.80ish. The SPY had a nice pullback 7/8 days ago and printed a bullish Morning Star candle pattern with bullish follow-through. Using the Red/Green Line crossover you can see a perfect Price Action Crossover on March 19. Today’s Trade-Ideas for consideration based on the RBB setup and Price Action crossover.

$282.00 remains the number for the bulls to beat. The slow grind and wall of worry are in full swing while traders look for a clue for more bullishness or bearishness. The trend is still bullish with price above the T-Line and the T-Line above our Red/Green Trendicator line. FOMC and China this week are both market movers and could push the SPY one way or another. The SPY closed Friday in Tier 1 and with price in the trending T-Bands we will stay predominantly bullish with a finger on the bearish button. Price closing below the Red T-Band would suggest the March 8, low would likely tested.

Based on the early morning futures today may be more of what we have seen the past two days, bulls trying to get through the SPY $280-$282 resistance line and the bears trying to knock us down, the 64K question is who will win?  With Thursday’s close, the weekly chart is trying to print a Bullish Harami; today has yet to print. (Harami’s require confirmation). The overall outlook remains bullish based on a trend line from the January 3, low to the March 8, low. We have seen both long and short trades work this past week with base hits profits taken. The short term outlook remains choppy and boring at times, the perfect market for taking your money. Yesterday closed with a Bearish Shooting Star as price challenges the March 4^th high. The past four days the SPY has posted four higher highs and four higher lows. The bears took action to defend their presence in the chart and forced the weak close creating a Bearish Shooting Star closing back below the Green T-Line Band, but still above the Red Band. The bands indicate the trend is still bullish and the price action is suggesting a rest, pull back may be in order. For bearish confirmation, the candlestick following the Shooting Star candlestick needs to be bearish or black. Price needs to be closing at lower levels below the shooting star candlestick to indicate selling activity. The VXXB chart closed with a Doji indication indecision, at least for the day. Today’s price action in the VIX- could be telling for the next few days in the overall market. Stay nimble, use stops and think about base hits.

Back above the lower T-Line band on a Bullish Morning Star Signal. Follow-through is key to the success of a candlestick signal clue such as the Bullish Morning Star. I personally use the body high of the first candle in the signal and consider the SPY bullish over the blue line $276.85. A close back below the blue line would suggest the buyers are not ready and the sellers are fighting back. Bullishness is still needed over $281.90 before the buyers can challenge the 2018 highs. Both the Red/Green line and the Volatility stop turned green after being red and pushing price closer to resistance. Price action is king and follow-through is a must for the bullishness to continue. Tip – Follow-through does not have to happen the very next day. Cautious and nimble is a quality trait of a successful trader and as of late that quality has been tested daily.
